Symposium Info

Mission: Assemble early career scientists and faculty advisors annually for an informal conference-style event for scientific presentations and networking activities with the goal of (1) improving early career scientific research, education and training in an informal and friendly conference environment, (2) establishing new collaborations with neighboring research groups and (3) gaining national recognition of the southeastern states as a center of excellence in biogeochemistry and geobiology research.

Our 2021 event will be a 1-day virtual conference on Saturday 15 May 2021. This ~150-person symposium will be modeled after the highly successful Southern California Geobiology Symposium. It will revive a similar symposium started by former Georgia Tech faculty members Don Canfield and Phillipe van Cappellen in the 1990s. The symposium will be held on Saturday May 2021 starting at 9AM, with 20-minute talks, virtual reception time, and an interactive poster session. Our event will conclude with an awards ceremony Saturday evening. We will celebrate student research efforts with cash prizes for multiple award categories including science communication presentation, the best three talks and posters voted on by the faculty committee will be awarded to encourage participation. Faculty advisors of students and postdocs presenting are highly encouraged to attend with their lab groups. Symposium registration is free!

We are pleased to announce the 8th Annual Southeastern Biogeochemistry Symposium will take place May 15, 2021 virtually with special thanks to the Gatherly platform.
